The Camp Staff listed below. Coaching Staff is subject to change because of their busy schedule.Mac Wilkins – 4 x Olympian
Mac Wilkins’ career spanned 23 years, four Olympic teams and four world records. He will be remembered as one of the greatest all-around throwers of all-time.
Graduate of the University of Oregon, Wilkins set lifetime bests of 69-11/4 in the shot put, 232,10 in the discus, 208-10 in the hammer throw and 257-4 in the javelin. He was nationally ranked in the first three events, but it was in the discus where he achieved his greatest glory. He set the world discus record four times and five times set the American discus mark. A member of four US Olympic teams, Wilkins achieved his greatest Olympic fame in 1976 when he won the gold medal after setting an Olympic record of 224-0 in the preliminaries. He was also on the 1980 US Olympic team that didn’t compete, placed second at the 1984 Games and was fifth at the 1988 Games.
When asked what to look for in a good discus throw, Mac said, “Look for a fast release and a smooooooth flight pattern. A quartering wind is helpful since the discus is aerodynamic, much like an airplane wing.”
Tim Bright – 3 x Olympian
Tim wanted to play football, but was told he was too small...then discovered he was good at many different track and field events -- enter the decathlon! One year after finishing college at Abilene Texas Christian, Tim made his first of three Olympic teams. Bright remains ACU's only three-time Olympian, competing twice as a decathlete and once as a vaulter. After competing in 7 events at the 1988 Olympic Games in Korea, he set a world record in the pole vault decathlon. He was continually ranked in the top 10 nationally for over 10 years. He is a 19’2 plus vaulter and an 8,400 plus decathlete, a 3-time Olympian, 4-world championship and a highly respected guy!
His basic vaulting tips: “Run fast, hold high and plant hard. Every pole vault coach in history has used those words at one time or another, and they still apply today.”
Dave Johnson – Olympian, bronze medalist
It was Dave-over-Dan at the ’92 trials as Dave Johnson romped to an 8,649-point winning performance. Johnson is a four-time USA champion decathlete and a bronze medalist during the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. Johnson burst in the national consciousness in the famous “Dan vs. Dave” Reebok commercials, launched during the 1992 Super Bowl. The Reebok campaign featured the competition between up-and-coming decathlete Dan O’ Brien and the champion Dave Johnson to qualify for the 1992 Olympics.
He is a coach and teacher at West Albany High School. His favorite event is the javelin.
“American decathletes are traditionally strong in speed and power events like the sprints, hurdles, and jumps. Points are awarded based upon performance, not placing. The grueling running events at the end often determine the winner.”
